As Canada’s original cooking school in a winery, what could be more natural than our emphasis on local ingredients and Strewn VQA wine. While Saturday classes includes a wine pairing with the meal, we’re taking the wine education component up a notch in our new seasonal Food & Wine Weekends.

Schedule

Saturday

Strewn barrel cellar

Day one starts mid-afternoon with two hours of interactive wine education. First up is a “sensory” wine experience where you will explore the four true tastes (salt, sweet, sour, bitter) and their impact on your perception of wine. You will have a chance put your knowledge to the test and match wine to different flavour profiles.

Then it’s into the wine making area to taste wines from barrels and tanks.  All of this under the tutelage of one of Strewn’s wine educators or member of the winemaking team.

Around 4:00 pm, the focus shifts to cooking in the Wine Country Cooking School’s beautiful hands-on kitchen. You will cook a three-course dinner (paired with wine of course). The recipes are created for recreational cooks and we hope you will make them again and again at home.  Throughout the cooking class, your instructor will share relevant tips and techniques. You will eat the meal in the school’s private dining room, with comments on the wine pairings from a Strewn wine educator or winemaker.

Sunday

Day two starts bright and early at 9:00 am with coffee/tea, pastries and plenty of talk about food, wine and yesterday’s experience!  The focus for Sunday's meal is creating a delicious brunch menu –one that doesn’t need to be saved for special occasions.  You will prepare two seasonally-themed courses, perfect for serving to family and guests. The instruction will include tips for making dishes in advance and minimizing last minute preparation. Around noon you sit down to enjoy the meal, which will be paired with wine (complete with the inspiration for the match).

NOTES:
Menus vary with the season and food allergies/sensitivities of participants.

What does the program cost?
$775 for two people (Cooking Pair) or $425 for one person (Solo Cook) including instruction, food, wine, recipes and a logo'd apron for each participant. Prices are in Canadian dollars and 13% HST (tax) is applicable. Bookings are considered firm and payment is processed at time of registration.

What about accommodation?
Accommodation is not included in the program tuition but there are many options nearby. The Wine Country Cooking School is a 10-minute drive from the heritage district of Niagara-on-the-Lake where you will find a number of quality boutique hotels/inns and literally hundreds of Bed & Breakfast establishments. Niagara Falls, Ontario, is a 25-minute drive and offers larger hotel properties, spectacular views of the Falls and plenty of night life.
